Artist: Mimicat
Song: Ai coração
Currently with bookmakers: 25th (150/1-400/1)
Place 2022: 9th in the final
Wins: 1 2017

Mimicat won Festival da Canção 2023 after wining the popular vote and drawing on the jury vote with Edmundo Inácio's "A festa", and though they were both awarded 12 jury points, Mimicat should have been declared the jury winner on countback as she got 12 points from more regional juries than Edmundo did. In taking out Festival da Canção she also defeated former Eurovision representative for Portugal Cláudia Pascoal who finished last in the final after automatic elevation from Portugal's 2017 win.

Ai coração is a toe tappingly good song. A lot of effort was put into presentation, much more than when Mimicat, under the name of Izamena, tried to get into Eurovision in 2001. In 22 years she has become a great little performer and this song needs to be performed to perform well. The more popular songs are not as enjoyable as this one though and it should make the finals and finish in the top half.

Portugal has sent a few mononymous artists to Eurovision. In 1988 it was Dora who graces the stage, at her second Eurovision for Portugale in 3 years and in that year she had the better hair.

LUM!X feat. Pia Maria were internally selected to represent Austria with a dance song co-written by 1/3 of Eiffel 65. MARO won both the Jury and public vote at Festival da Canção 2022 with her self penned indi tune. Vastly different songs for the first semi final.

LUM!X is better known for Monster, Thunder, both of which featured Eiffel 65's Gabry Ponte. Though LUM!X has star power, Pia Maria is lacking, and also lacks in the vocal department, which she blames on long Corona. MARO has no vocal issues and has an interesting vocal quality. She also has some starpower having worked with  Jacob Collier and Odesza, but mainly her strength is that she can sing.

In the end it is a matter of what the audience likes best. If Pia Maria has some success with the vocal coach the Austrian delegation have assigned to her, then herr and LUM!X could do rather well. Meanwhile MARO could put people to sleep. The more these songs are heard the better they sound, but with one listen it is anyone's game.

This round goes to... tied.

2021 The Black Mamba – Love is on My Side

Current Bookmakers: 25th

The Black Mamba have been around since 2010 and released 3 albums and have one of the least extensive bios on the Eurovision website. One of the best songs in 2021 but no Bio. If it wasn't for the three albums it would be easily believed that they came out of nowhere.

Festival da Canção went down to a tie-break this year, and like most Eurovision countries, that means the televote winner wins. Second place may have been wearing an off the shoulder tracky jumper, but musically it was typical of what you expect to go to Eurovision, as was last years selected entry. This year’s entry is more what you would expect form an entry in maybe the 90s, just better

This year’s entry is one of my favourite Portuguese songs sent to Eurovision. Much better than the primary school principal they sent in 1976

Dark moody ethic ballad verses birdman. I mean serious WTF Portugal. It is not that I don't understand what the song and performance are about, more that I don't want to. I feel like a wanker ever suggesting that there may be an explanation. There is no explanation, there is just fluid.

Juries are meant to protect the nation from being humiliated at Eurovision, and in the Semi's the jury in Portugal got it right. In the final they fell into line with the public in the final. This is no "Amar pelos dois", there is not even love for one with this. Georgia had no Jury to protect them but Portugal. Why? Next year less coolaid and more jury.

The less said the better really. Georgia would otherwise be considered not great, but next to Portugal it is a fucking godsend. I am going Georgia.

Appearances: 49
Wins: 1
Selection method: National selection Festival da Canção
Vote: Jury and public vote (tied, winner of the public vote inflicted upon Eurovision)
Winner: Cláudia Pascoal
Song: O Jardim

Portugal had a tie in their national selection this year with “O Jardim” getting 10 points from the jury and 12 from the public and “Para sorrir eu não preciso de nada" getting 12 from the jury and 10 from the public. In Portugal what they people want they get, so Cláudia is going to Eurovision over the possibly marginally better Catarina Miranda, though in reality, neither are great.

Festival da Canção was first career win, and considering her career in music has been competing in Ídolos (2010 and 2015), X Factor (2013), The Voice Of Portugal (2017). This is already the “I am desperate to be famous” holy trinity, but on top of this she has also competed in CC Casting to win hosting duties of Curto Circuito. This girl needs to write a resume and get a real job like everyone else does.

“O Jardim” sounds a little like “When Love takes Over” without all the good bits. It may be presented well on the night, it should be seeing Portugal is hosting the event, but it may put a few people to sleep.

Sometimes only silence enables one to establish what they want to say. That was the theme of the 1984 entry from Portugal. There is something in that for all of us.

Portugal
Semi Final 1
Artist: Salvador Sobral
Song: Amar Pelos Dois
Odds: $12 (5th)

Word of the day:
avô - grandfather
Who this song is targeted towards

This years Portuguese entry sounds a little like something from the first decade and a half of Eurovision. The old style sound is probably why it is popular with older Eurovision fans. With most music in Eurovision aimed at younger fans, songs aimed at the grey (haired) vote have a lot of potential to win, which would be a first for Portugal.

Salvador competed in Idolos 3 in 2009/2010 and finished 7th after performing "Jura", which may have been a cruel elimination. He was on Idolos as a clean cut young man. Since then he has adopted a hipster look and the beard and long hair has aged him about 15 years in only 7.

This years song was written by Salvador's sister, Luísa, who is also an Idolos graduate who finished 3rd in Idolos 1. It still sounds weird that Salvador is singing a love song his sister wrote. Incest is the best, put your sister to the test...

And from music that sounds like grandfather music to music that is grandfather music, Portugal's first entry from 1964

Leonor Andrade - Há um Mar que nos Separa

They say ‘if you haven’t got anything nice to say, don’t say anything’. I never listened to them. Why would I, If I did listen to them then I would have nothing to write about this song.

The bookmakers rate this as the worse song this yeah and I don’t think they are that far from wrong. The end sounds like a female cat being fvcked on the back fence. It is the key change at the end that stuffs her up most, and I am sure she can learn the tune by mid next month.

This looks like another loser from Portugal, which is a shame because I like to see new winners, especially ones that have tried for so long. Maybe next year.

A couple of previous Eurovision entries competed for the chance to represent Portugal again, including this 965 (and 1969) loser

so the first semi is a few days away and the rehearsals are progressing nicely. this is the running order of the first semi. SPOILER WARNING: this has links to rehearsal clips and comments on the rehearsals.

so I think Hungary and Estonia have the best performance this semi and the Netherlands and Moldova are auto non-qualifiers

Portugal have not only never won a Eurovision, but they have never finished in the top 5. The Highest Portugal has got has been 6th in 1996. This year doesn't have a chance to get even that.

Artist: Suzy
Song: Quero Ser Tua

Parts of this song sound like they are lifted straight from Lambada and just sped it up slightly. Lambada was largely lifted from other sources too, but it came out good. This isn't great

I think what is the most distracting about this clip is that the beating on the fake drums appears to have been picked up on the mic. Also her dress is certainly a LITTLE black dress. It is so short that you can tell that she is not a natural blonde. If she wears the same dress at Eurovision, then it is a drink for exposed bits. Smashing.

Suzy has had a few poor performances of this song from what I understand, but then there have been some good ones. If she doesn't smash it on the semi, this may not even qualify. If she does, it still wont win the final

Even if she wears this very short LBD on the night it will not be the shorted dress ever on the Eurovision stage. There are much shorter like the Ukraine's effort in 2009. Is that even classifiable as a dress?

Performer: Filipa Sousa
Song: Vida Minha

It is possibly not a good idea to import a songwriter who has never won Eurovision, who is from a country that has never won Eurovision to help a country that has never won Eurovision win Eurovision. It could be a fairytale, but it wont be. it will more likely be a powernap. If you dont take the opportunity for the powernap, the song might force it upon you. My god this song is boring!

With 5 backing singers, there is no opportunity to even have an interesting performance for this song. At best, this song should be played at a funeral, to make the mourners leave.

people talk about Portuguese being a beautiful language. have hey ever actually heard two  women talking in pork and cheese? You know that woman with the annoying voice talking loudly on her phone on the morning train... well multiply that by 10 and then tell me you don't want to slap them. a

Anyways, because of Andrej Babic's contribution to this years entry from Portugal, I have an excuse to play Feminnem's 'Call me'. Then it is Adelaide Ferreira, which can only bad, nothing good can come out of Adelaide (if she didn't warble, it wouldn't have been so bad).
