Artist: Teya and Salena
Song: Who the hell is Edgar?
Currently with bookmakers: 10th* (40/1-100/1)
Place 2022: 15th of 17 in Semi final 1
Wins: 1, 2014

Teya and Salena met while competitors on Starmania, an Idol rip-off in Austria, and were internally selected to represent Australia in 2023. Teya (Teodora Špirić) tried to represent her parents native Serbia in 2020 but finished 10th at Beovizija. Salena (Selina-Maria Edbauer) also tried her hand at Eurovision in 2019 for Austria, but was not selected by the broadcaster that time. She has also competed on The Voice of Germany in 2017 before the fateful Starmainia meeting in 2021.

Who the hell is Edgar? has ben one of the more popular entries this year since it was announce and it is certainly a great entry. It also has a great dance routine with it which, if it is performed on stage will get the live audience going. This song has been hovering around the top 10 and could be a sleeper and win, or it could cash and burn. We'll see

There is the potential that Eurovision acts of the past look at new entries and wonder what happened to music, particularly if they came from 1959 when a Calypso was yodelled at Eurovision by this guy.

LUM!X feat. Pia Maria were internally selected to represent Austria with a dance song co-written by 1/3 of Eiffel 65. MARO won both the Jury and public vote at Festival da Canção 2022 with her self penned indi tune. Vastly different songs for the first semi final.

LUM!X is better known for Monster, Thunder, both of which featured Eiffel 65's Gabry Ponte. Though LUM!X has star power, Pia Maria is lacking, and also lacks in the vocal department, which she blames on long Corona. MARO has no vocal issues and has an interesting vocal quality. She also has some starpower having worked with  Jacob Collier and Odesza, but mainly her strength is that she can sing.

In the end it is a matter of what the audience likes best. If Pia Maria has some success with the vocal coach the Austrian delegation have assigned to her, then herr and LUM!X could do rather well. Meanwhile MARO could put people to sleep. The more these songs are heard the better they sound, but with one listen it is anyone's game.

This round goes to... tied.

2020: Vincent Bueno- Alive
2021: Vincent Bueno - Amen

Current Bookmakers: 26th

Vincent Bueno won Musical! Die Show in Austria and splits his career between Austria and his parents’ native country, the Philippines. In Austria, 35 year old Vincent does a lot of musical theatre, but he has released 4 albums. Does he have Sex appeal? No.

Though his dad was the lead singer in a rock band, Vincent is more R&B than rock, and this is shown heavily in the song he was due to send to Eurovision in 2020. That song was very Jamiroquai, whereas this year’s song is more of a Eurovision ballad. The 2020 song would probably have performed better. This year’s song sounds like at least 15 other songs that have been to Eurovision in the last 20 years.

In two Eurovision songs Vincent has not got through the dictionary past the letter A. If 1977 is an example, he can skip B if he gets another chance at Eurovision.

Albania - 0 wins
Whining ethnic vocal to a dance-able pop tune verses a whiny songwriting pop princess wannabe who really should find a real job. Neither of these songs is rated as a challenger by the bookmakers and there is a reason for that.

Albania went for the tried and failed method of selecting someone who is hugely popular in their home country. With a career in music and the media spanning about 20 years, it was hard for any form of national selection to go against her. And though national selections sometimes get the wrong result, it is better than an crap internal selection. Merci, Cherie, please exit stage left. There is no way Austria will Rise like the Phoenix with this song.

It is a matter of which song is the least shit and with that in mind I am going Albania

Selection method: Internal selection
Vote: A song by writers of this Eurovision pedigree should suffer the injustice of a vote
Winner: Cesár Sampson
Song: Nobody But You

This song sounds a lot like what the song by Australia’s Isaiah Firebrace should have sounded like last year. ‘Nobody but you’ is remarkably similar to ‘Don’t come easy’ in parts, particularly the second verse sounds similar. Cesár sings it better than Isaiah did as this tune sits more comfortably in Cesár’s range than it did in Isaiah’s.

Songwriters for this song have been involved in a few Eurovision entries. In 2017 (at least some of them) wrote ‘Dance Alone’ for Macedonia, ‘In Too Deep’ For Macedonia, and ‘Beautiful Mess’ for Bulgaria which finished second overall. They also wrote for Bulgaria in 2016 with ‘If Love Was a Crime’, which was one of the better songs of the night. The same cannot be said about this year’s composition.

Cesár is not a stranger to the Eurovision stage having been a backing singer to the Bulgarian songs his songwriters contributed to Eurovision in 2016 and 2017. He is not expected to go top 5 like those songs did though. If he gets a top 10 finish it will be more than the song deserves.

This year Austria are being a bit the same with their song, very safe. In 1971 they extended themselves a little singing a song in Viennese German. They extended themselves too much and finished third-last and never sung in that dialect again.

Semi Final 2
Artist: Nathan Trent (Nathanaele Koll)
Song: Running on Air
Odds: $151

Word of the day
Laufen - Running
Away

Nathan appeared in German X Factor in a group called Boyz II Hot which got knocked out before the top 10 after performing ‘When Will I be Famous’. Nathan was also in the top 33 for Unser Song 2017, the German Eurovision selection but had to withdraw after being announced as the Austrian representative. Germany’s loss has not helped Austria much.

The odds less reflect the song than it does the fact that is it pretty much a forgone conclusion that Italy will win this year. Running on Air will get votes and should make the final as it is a simple tune that is likeable and the singer a good looking little rooster, but something crazy would have to happy for this song to win… which is possible because Eurovision is in Ukraine and that is a nutbag nation.

This is not a mindless love song by a former ‘talent’ show contestant. Love isn’t mentioned in it all. No love, peace or hand-waving… why would this be sent to Eurovision.

This year’s entry was chosen by internal selection; however that is not always the case. In 2004 Austria had a national final called song.null.vier which included the 1976 winners, Robinson and Waterloo. When Robinson and Waterloo came second they tried to take it to court to challenge the result. Even if the 2004 was better than the 1976 one, it would have probably been best not to send it.

ZOË - Loin d’ici

German is an awesome language that gave us words like Schadenfreude, Fremdschämen, Backpfeifengesicht and Handschuhschneeballwerfer. Why, when you have all this awesome German to use would you sing in French. I just don’t get it. Why!

Austria had the most interesting national selection. There were ten songs that competed in “Wer singt für Österreich?”, the show to determine who would go to Eurovision. The show had a Jury element and a public televote. This song finished equal 4th with the jury but first with the public. When the totals were put together, ZOË finished equal second with Bella Wagner. For reasons that I do not understand Bella was considered to have come third. The top two songs by ZOË and Elly V (who came first with the jury, second with the public and first overall in the final) went to a super-final play off which ZOË won. I don’t think either of the other performances were better overall, but I don’t agree that the superfinal was the best way to determine the winner in this scenario.

This song is a fair way back with the bookies. Controversy in the national selections often has a slight impact on the final results and so this song really doesn’t hav a chance. Even if it makes the final, it will just be making the numbers.

You know it doesn’t have to be German German. It can be a dialect like Viennese German like in 1971

The Makemakes - I Am Yours

This band is classed as pop –rock, kind of like the candy, but this song, if anything, is old-school. I would work just as well on a mono 45 as it does in HD, actually I think it would sound better on a 45. It would also sound good as the theme music to a TV series but the bookmakers don’t think it sounds that good as a Eurovision song.

This song won the national final so convincingly that I don’t know why Austria bothered with a superfinal. I don’t actually mind this song and it will get a big cheer in the final being the hometown hero.

The coolest thing about this band is that they named themselves after a dwarf planned that was discovered in 2005. That planet was named after an Easter Island deity because the planet was discovered just after Easter (makes sense). Makemake is proof that science and religion can get along.

From a little planet to My Little Planet from 1976

This is all of the semi final 2 performers this year. SPOILER ALERT this has details of their performances as well as a link to their rehearsals. If you want to keep how dire the acts are a surprise, please stop reading now

There is always one Eurovision semi that is far better than the other. This is not the better semi.

Anyways

full list of second semi finalists )

so in short, I doubt anything from this semi will win or even come close. either the song is dire or the performance it not good enough to get it votes.
Best performances: well... possibly slovenia
Auto non-qualifiers: either greece or poland wont qualify or both,

the highlight of this semi is clearly Jessica Mauboy

Austria are in the middle of a long dry spell in Eurovision. The only win Austria have managed was in 1966 with Udo Jürgens third entry in the event in a row. I doubt Conchita Wurst will go in thrice, but you never know.

Artist: Conchita Wurst
Song: Rise like the Phoenix

There is usually a Kitsch-ness to drag acts in Eurovision. Slovenia's Sestre and Denmark's DQ exemplified this. These acts were also shown up by their poor singing. Before taking on the persona or Conchita, Tom Neuwirth was already a finalist in a popstars like singing contest in Austria and was quite the little performer.

Though Conchita's chances don't look great (the bookies put Austria out of the top 10), it appears she may have had an affect on the favourites chances. Since controversy broke last week in comments by Aram MP3 that appeared to be trans and homophobic, Armenia's odds has slipped slightly from even money to not so even money. I appreciated that from this Conchita has made this year more interesting and that gets votes from me for that.

I like what she represents and stands for. As for the song, meh, it is another bond theme. At the moment though I only want it to win to fvck up Aram MP3.

Attempted Bond themes crop up regularly in Eurovision. Some, like Slovenian 2005 try to be deliberately bad so as to hide that it is an attempted Bond theme, but we know what you are up to, you crazy Slovenes.

2013...
Artist: Natália Kelly
Song: Shine

This song is fine until the vocal gymnastics start. I will put up with vocal masturbation so long as it is adding content to the song with words, but when it is nothing but the singer orgasming over themselves, I have no time for it.

The song starts of pleasant, and Natália proves herself to be quite a good little performer. Looking at her Bio on wikipedia, it is getting her to stop performing thats the trick. At least we know that she will give us a performance on the night.

Even if 'Shine' doesn't qualify for the final, it will be an improvement on the Austrian result of last year. It is hard to do worse than last though, so Go Natália...

In the end, this is Eurovision and it is all about the Musik

passionpop: (completely)
Performer: Trackshittaz
Song: Woki Mit Deim Popo (Shake your booty)

This is possible the classiest song in this years Eurovision, it is class with a capital ASS... literally. if this wasn't so tongue-in-cheek, it would border on bringing the contest into disrepute or something.

here are some lyrics (translated to english):
Your booty has feelings
Your booty is a part of you
Don’t just leave it on the chair
Your booty has an opinion, yeah
Your booty wants to move

makes it sound like the subject of the song has worms right? that and well... body parts having an opinion is a guy thing, you know, the man brain is in the lower part of the body, and bootys don't think, they fart.

The song is catchy, I will give it that, but i fear it will be the only thing more annoying than Jedward... though it is early days.  Maybe there can be something more annoying than this, or maybe I will have a frontal lobotomy and like this song... though a bottle in front of me is more likely...

Ethno-Hip-Hop is not new to Manurovision, Remember Greenjolly from 2005 and I never understood why people get Australia and Austria confused.... until this song
