Song: Power
Currently with bookmakers: 29th (100/1-500/1)
Place 2022: 23rd in the final
Wins: 0

Diljá entered Ísland Got Talent in 2015 when she was 12 and since then has been living in Denmark and getting singing lessons. Back in Iceland with a song produced by Pálmi Ragnar Ásgeirsson who also produced Iceland's 2015 entry Unbroken, which failed to make the final. Hopefully Diljá finishes better.

Power was performed in Icelandic in the semis of Söngvakeppnin 2023, as is required by the rules of the competition, however the Final performance was performed in English, as the requirement in the final is to sing in the language you intend to perform the song in at Eurovision. Neither version is superior and in the end the song is a fairly standard Eurovision dance-pop. At best this should expect a mid-range finish.

Iceland has less than 400 000 people yet 132 entries were forwarded to compete for their Eurovision entry this year. Every year this tiny country puts its best foot forward for Eurovision but when it comes to wins they are All Out of Luck

Systur are a group formed by the Eyþórsdóttir sisters that are daughters of jazz-funk musician Eyþór Gunnarsson. Konstrakta is Ана Ђурић, who's musical genre's with include indi-pop, avant-pop and jazz. Konstrakta is also an architect, so if her musical career fails she has a back up.

Konstrakta's is satirical on the society she is in, a little like Montenegro's 2012 song Euro Neuro, but more musical. Systur's song on the other hand is serious. It is seriously like a spaghetti western song. Systur are meant to be Icelandic folk, but I was getting mountains in Italy that were meant to look like the US, just cheaper. Not that Systur are cheap.

In the end it is about what the audience is into, and though a countryesk twang has proven popular in recent years at Eurovision, In Corpore Sano is by far the better song. Even if you don't understand the lyrics, the song packs a punch.

This round goes to Serbia.

2020: Daði og Gagnamagnið – Think About Things
2021: Daði og Gagnamagnið – 10 years

Current bookmakers: 5th

Daði og Gagnamagnið is the brainchild of Daði Freyr Pétursson. The band Gagnamagnið (The Data) includes his wife, his sister and a three of his friends. They first went to Söngvakeppnin to be Iceland's Eurovision representative in 2017 and came second to Svala, who finished 15/18 in the Semi

Last year Daði og Gagnamagnið were the darlings of Eurovision and despite the event being cancelled, Think About Things has success in a number of countries in Europe. Daði og Gagnamagnið have gone from being tine 2020 favourites to being just one of the acts in 2021. There is nothing hugely different to 2020, it is probably just that some of the charm has worn off. Also the question is how they will perform the choral section from near the end within the rules of Eurovision.

Iceland used Söngvakeppnin to choose their performers for the first years they were competed in Eurovision and then after a break from 1995 to 1999, recommenced using Söngvakeppnin. From 1995 to 1999 (with the exception of 1998 when they were relegated), Iceland used internal selections which were not popular. Despite finishing 11th in 1996, a lot of Iceland was not interested in Anna Mjöll, other than the fact that she was well dressed compared with other singers in the contest

This year I don't have much time and I have a lot going on in my personal life, so to get through Eurovision 2019 I will be doing a verses series with two songs from the same semi (or final) so without further ado...

Finland - 1 win
Darude feat. Sebastian Rejman - "Look Away"

Verses

Iceland - 0 wins
Hatari - "Hatrið mun sigra"

Repetitive Dull Soulless Dance music verses... well... I am not really sure what Iceland has given us and I am not sure they can stage it in a G timeslot. I am so glad Eurovision goes to the US nowdays. the censors will love this.

Finland is a fair to say a Eurovision standard. A well known name doing music from an expected genre and generally conforming. The only part of Iceland that is standard is the key-change. Iceland is probably the biggest 'fuck you' to the competition since Lordi won (for Finland) in 2006

Who will perform better: This could well depend on how Iceland is allowed to stage their song. Finland is a sure qualifier but Iceland could well the chocolates between these two. I am going Iceland.

Selection method: National Final Söngvakeppnin 2018
Vote: Public in the semis with Jury wildcard, Public and jury in the final and public only in the Superfinal
Winner: Ari Ólafsson
Song: Our Choice

The son of the snowman from Frozen is going to Eurovision despite coming second in the national final in both the Jury and the public televote. Fortunately for Ari there was a Superfinal between the first and second place in the final and he beat the winner in the final to be Iceland’s Eurovision representative. Dagur Sigurðsson’s "Í stormi" was probably the better song.

It is rare in Eurovision to see a song that only has one writer credited, but “Our Choice” is one such song. Maybe only Þórunn Erna Clausen was willing to admit to being involved in the composition of this mind numbingly boring trash. Þórunn Erna Clausen had other writers willing to admit they contributed to her other song in Söngvakeppnin 2018, "Aldrei gefast upp” sung by by Fókus. It is not unexpected that Clausen had multiple compositions in Söngvakeppnin 2018 seeing she has also had compositions in 2012, 2014, 2016 and 2017. This is her first time to Eurovision through. Perseverance pays off… but your perseverance does not benefit the rest of us.

There is little chance that this song by a contestant from The Voice Iceland (2015) will challenge the favourites. It probably won’t even make the final but if it does it will be an opportune moment for a toilet break.

A similar looking fellow was sent to Eurovision by Iceland in 1989. Maybe Ari can borrow those awesome pants.

Semi final 1
Artist: Svala
Song: Paper
Odds: $51

Word of the day
salerni - toilet
Where the paper for this song came from

Every Eurovision act has a Q&A given to them to add to their bio. Everything that needs to be known about Svala is in one question:
Do you have a (lucky) routine before you go on stage?
I bathe myself in unicorn tears and take a shot of snow on fire.

Whereas many artists in this year’s Eurovision were contestants on the voice, Svala betters them, she is a judge and mentor. A mentor is usually someone who is successful enough to not have to sell themselves as cheap talent in competitions like Eurovision. Maybe Svala is only going to Eurovision because her dad did it in 1995.

Most fans of Eurovision consider this song as the “what the fuck” song of the year. It will only qualify for the final if everything else that it is up against is shit, which is possible. It does offer a question though, why do so many female singers sing songs about enabling their narcissistic partner?

Once upon a time Iceland was that weird kid at school, trying hard to be like everyone else and failing. The song from 1990 was everything a Eurovision song should be and it still only managed 4th. It is good that they gave up trying…

Greta Salóme - Hear Them Calling

An official clip with a drop of the last two Swedish winners in her performance potentially shows what we can expect in her live performance. Ok it is a large dollop of last year’s winner, but it is a good performance even if it lacks originality.

This is Greta’s second tilt at Eurovision. Her first was in 2012, something we will never forget, in a duet with Jonsi, who then was a repeat offender after first showing up in 2004. Iceland has a very small population so you expect repeat offenders, but they quite often find something really good, like Thor from 2013. Yes, I know his name was not Thor but it should have been.

Both this song and Greta’s Eurovision entry in 2012 have a pagan/fantasy feel to it. I said in 2012 that ‘Never Forget’ could be right at home in the next season (season 3) of Game of Thrones. This year’s official clip reminds me of the end of Season 2 when Melisandre gave birth to The Darkness. At least I don’t hate Greta’s songs though.

Going way back to another time in almost another life, Halla Margrét Árnadóttir now sings opera, but in she was a Eurovision star in 1987

Maria Olafs – Unbroken

The voting processes of some countries fascinate me. This song came second in the final, but Iceland is one of those countries that have a superfinal. This resulted in the guy who won the final in both Jury and televote coming second overall in a superfinal based only on televote to someone who came second in televote and 4th with the jury in the final. I am not saying Friðrik Dór’s song is better, but it is another example of a flawed system of voting in Europe.

Technically, I dislike songs that think every chorus has to be a crescendo. Also, lyrically this is too repetitive, there only appears to be one verse… if that. It is a very lazy piece.

This is an inoffensive radio song that should qualify and will fit neatly in the mid to lower end of the results. If I really need to go, I won’t mind using this song as a toilet break, but then with a good enough performance, this song could almost be watchable.

So this song got into the superfinal with the aid of the juries and the jury was not involved in the superfinal. One of the jurors took this to Eurovision in 1988 so his opinion may best be ignored

so the first semi is a few days away and the rehearsals are progressing nicely. this is the running order of the first semi. SPOILER WARNING: this has links to rehearsal clips and comments on the rehearsals.

so I think Hungary and Estonia have the best performance this semi and the Netherlands and Moldova are auto non-qualifiers

Iceland have been hanging around Eurovision for almost 3 decades with no success. Their best effort was in 2009  where they came second with a song that was so perfect for Eurovision that in any other year it would have won. The last 6 years Iceland has qualified for the final every time, understandable with songs like “Je ne sais quoi" and "Ég á líf". This year sees a slight departure from the Eurovision standard, so will it be successful?

Artist: Pollapönk
Song: No Prejudice

“Pollaönk was founded by two teacher’s who wanted to make music that appealed to both children and adults a like that the whole family could enjoy together”, so they are like The Wiggles, just less annoying to adults. The Wiggles with beards.

This song is so annoyingly catchy and fun. Listen to it twice and try to not sing along the second time. You will either love it or shoot yourself in the head to avoid it, but you can't hate it.

I would love Iceland to win and host a Eurovision. I know they wont do it with this song but imagine the event. It would have to be held in Reykjavík because any other town in in Iceland would be doubled in population when Eurovision comes to town. Imagine it though, and imagine if a volcano started to erupt soon before the event so no one could fly there.

The Wiggles style is not new to Eurovision. It failed to qualify for the final when Piero and the Musicstars tried it for Switzerland in 2003. I hope Iceland will do better.

passionpop: (my ass)
Performer: Greta Salóme & Jónsi
Song: Never Forget

This song sounds like it should be on the sound track album for Game Of Thrones and if it turns up in series 2 I wouldn't be surprised. At least it will have a use after Eurovision now that Series 3 of Game of Thrones has been commissioned.

Icaland has sent some amazing stuff to Eurovision and have thus far been unlucky to not win the contest. This is in the top 10 in the betting, but it wont win because of economics. Where would Iceland get the money to host the 2013 contest, the bank?

I dont dislike the song, but it lacks a WOW for me. The medieval influenced songs are so done and with the fantasy genre being 'in' atm, you just hear more of it. I don't hate it, i just don't think it is special.

I started previewing the songs for Eurovision in 2004, which is when Jónsi was last in Eurovision. back then I didnt review all the songs in the contest and Iceland was so good that I ignored it. I now remember why. First to songs for Fantasy soundtracks though from Slovakia

Euroband - this is my life

lyrics )

pick any European dance act of the early 90's and you have Euroband. it surprises me that Iceland is so far behind the times with this song.

what I sound most interesting is that there were the maximum 6 performers on the stage and only two had mics but I heard backing vocals.... a base vocal in a late chorus.... tut tut Iceland. Croatia have been penalised for that.

the highlights of the clip... the female vocalist... or atleast her hair, it had highlights and the highlights were pink and it matched the tie of the male vocalist.

This song starts in the second Semi and has to work up from there. if it gets in the top ten it goes to the final. I think it will hover around the edge of the top ten and is borderlne of getting in, like Silvia Night did... but this is no Silvia Night.
