Vesna is a six part all female group that were formed by Patricie Fuxová with women she met at the Jaroslav Ježek Conservatory with the name Vesna is presumably a reference to the Slavic goddess of spring Vesna won ESCZ 2023, the check national final in a bit of a landslide getting more than double the points of the second place artist.

My Sisters Crown is very much the sisterhood kind of song and the band refers to it as a gender quality protest. It does have parallels with Russia's last ever entry, Russian Woman, and despite using multiple languages in My Sisters Crown, Russian is not one of the languages used. Ukrainian and Bulgarian with Czech and English, but certainly no Russian. It is the rest of the sisterhood this is for.

If this song finishes 11th as the bookmakers predict, it will be the equal second highest Czechia has finished at Eurovision. The only song that was higher was in 2018 when Mikolas Josef finished 6th. He would have been top 5 with a more engaging performance and less mumbling. Still was a good song.

Bookies favourite: San Marino 150/1 (Czech Republic 300/1)

Achille Lauro has gone to San Remo in his native Italy, and failing to win there in 2019, 2020, and this year, he went to the tiny micro-nation of San Marino to see if he could go to Eurovision through them and succeeded. We Are Domi Could have competed in Czech Republic, where Dominika Hašková, in Norway where the rest of the band is from, or in the UK where they met. In the Czech Rebublic they smashed it with the international televote and the international Jury which is a weird voting system and we will see if it works

Achille Lauro is badged as a rap/hip hop star but he doesn't like to be put in that box. This song is definitely more rock with a Joan Jett sound and a Depeche Mode reference. It is even more retro that the late 90s electronica sound of We Are Domi. Though Rock has had more recent success at Eurovision, Electronica might come up one day.

In the end though we judge by what we are given. Achille Lauro has given us his live performance, which is good but not perfect. We Are Domi have given us a fantastic video clip which tells a story and draws you into the song. If it was judge by the presentation clips, We Are Domi are easy winners, despite the bookmakers and more with OGAE

This round goes to We Are Domi

2020: Benny Cristo – Kemama
2021: Benny Cristo – omaga

Current Bookmakers: 35th

Benny Cristo is a committed animal liberationist, former snowboarder and Brazilian jujitsu competitor, though only white-belt so it is not really worth putting on the official Eurovision Bio, but there it is. Vegans need these things to make themselves feel better.

Last year Benny came through an online selection to come to represent Czech republic with a song that was a bit meh, there was nothing new about it. This years entry is a bit meh, but the kids will probably like it more.

The bookmakers do not rate this song at all and they think it will probably finish last or somewhere near. The nearest to last one could finish without being last was 2008 and this almost did not deserve the 9 points it got.

Czech Republic - 0 wins
Lake Malawi - "Friend of a Friend"

Verses

Hungary - 0 wins
Joci Pápai - "Az én apám"

Czech republic could have sent the song that came second in their national final and which won with the public and I would have been happy, but Friend of a friend is a better song than Space Sushi and a fabulous choice. Hungary didn't have as good as a selection and with the reliance on the Jury only to choose, they probably got the least worse result and sending someone who has done Eurovision before is safer.

Hungary is rather uninspiring, especially compared with Joci's previous entry in Eurovision which was at least interesting which was like gypsy rap. In 2017 Hungary went into the Semi paying $121 for the win and $26 to take the semi and in the end finished 8th. This year Joci is $251 to win. That implies the belief is even if this song qualifies, it will not win, it will not even make a challenge.

I saw the name Lake Malawi and I didn't think I would like the song, but it is now one of my faves. The Bookies may not like it much but I am going Czech Republic

Appearances: 6
Wins: 0
Selection method: National selection
Vote: Split between Jury and public voting submitted through the Eurovision app between 8 January 2018 to 22 January 2018
Winner: Mikolas Josef
Song: Lie To Me.

The official Eurovision version of this song has about three lines changed from the original, and the changes (in the second verse) are barely noticeable except that the YouTube clip of the original mutes the vocals in a few places due to liberal use of the word ‘fuck’. Either way this is a good song and has potential.

This song has most of the elements you need for a Eurovision win, a good looking singer (he is a model as well as a singer), an interesting song and a gimmick. The Trumpet in this could be up there with epic sax guy as the most memeable Eurovision performance if it is performed right. There are few clues though to how this will be performed live at Eurovision. So far though we have only really seen Mikolas standing in the middle of the stage singing to a backing track and dancing a bit. He is a good dancer though.

Possibly the biggest thing going against this song is that it was released in November 2017, almost 6 months before Eurovision. The song may be a little stale by the time it comes to the final. A fresh hot performance though will definitely change that. This better get the performance it deserves.

Czechia (Czech Republic) have been conformed to Eurovision expectations in recent years more than they did when they first hit the Eurovision stage. In 2007 they rocked.

Czechia/Czech Republic
Semi final 1
Artist: Martina Bárta
Song: My Turn
Odds: $301

Word of the day
drzý - Sassy
well for Eurovision anyways.

Martina Bárta is a singer and French horn player. She plays the French horn both in a classical context as well as improvised, like the sassy jazz artist she is. Eurovision won’t care for her sass and this song may not get out of the semi.

This song was written by Kyler Niko and DWB (Paul Drew, Greig Watts and Pete Barringer). Pete Barringer also co-wrote this year’s entry for Poland. This song is possibly the better of the two but it feels wrong. It feels more gospel than jazz. It is Ok though because if DWB are the new SAW then Martina Bárta can be the new Rick Astley. Her low tones might even complement his….

Since returning to Eurovision after a five year hiatus, the Czech Republic changed from national finals to internal selections to determine who to send to Eurovision. These have been more successful, but then they could not have been worse. Czechia/Czech Republic has only made it to the final once in 6 attempts and even then the finished second last. Maybe Czechia needs friends, either that or better entries.

2015 was the first internal selection. It was not terrible, but it wasn’t great either. This years song is probably better. They are learning but baby steps.

Gabriela Gunčíková - I Stand

This is dependence as a pop song. We have a generation that demands to be treated like individuals but they don’t see themselves as a person until they are no longer an individual. The Oxymoron of millennials.

Gabriela is another ‘talent’ show loser but at least she appears to be able to sing. What surprises me about this very middle of the road song is that it is in the top 15 with the bookmakers. Is it really that good or is it that this year that bad?

This video clip could be a shampoo commercial or a try hard Gotye clip. I don’t get the dark haired girl at the start and end of the clip and I don’t really care. I don’t care for the clip or the song. Bye bye Czechia.

The Czech Republic has never made it to the grand final. Maybe with a name change to Czechia and a more commercial song they can do better than 2009

Marta Jandová and Václav Noid Bárta - Hope Never Dies

The Czech Republic sent entries to Eurovision from 2007 to 2009 and they withdrew after not going anywhere. In 3 years the Czech Republic finished with 10 in total. Now they are back and I can see the Czech Republic maybe doubling that total.

Václav Noid Bárta sounds like the singer from the Crash Test Dummies, mmm mmm mmm mmm. Out of the two though, he would be the one you would expect to be the lead singer of an Alternative metal band, but that is actually Marta Jandová. That is as interesting as these two get though.

The song is a snore and I agree with the bookmakers that it belongs somewhere near the bottom of the pile. It is a shame but I hope the Czech Republic doesn’t withdraw again because of the poor result that this song is expected to get. We need the Czech Republic to return to be a cusion at the bottom of the ladder for everyone else…

I have to admit, ‘Hope Never Dies’ is a huge improvement from the last song sent to Eurovision by the Czech Republic….
