Artist: Mia Nicolai & Dion Cooper
Song: Burning Daylight
Currently with bookmakers: 20th (100/1-300/1
Place 2022: 11th in the final
Wins: 5 (1957, 1959, 1969, 1975, 2019)

Mia Nicolai & Dion Cooper were internally selected to represent the Netherlands by the Dutch broadcaster AVROTROS. Dion was a contestant on The Voice in 2015 but didn't get past the battles. Mia is a singer, actress and daughter of a Party for the Animals politician. She is also half Russian which currently goes down well in Europe.

Burning daylight is co-written by former Eurovision winner Duncan Laurence, who also brought Mia and Dion together. Musically there are similarities between this song and Duncan's Eurovision winner Arcade and that will probably go against Burning Daylight more than anything, but as always, and engaging performance can make even an average song win.

The Netherlands has a history of duos at Eurovision going back to 1971, which was a completely different time, and on top of that they borrowed from another time to give us something timeless... or timeful...

Most Entries: Netherlands 61 (Romania 21)
Most Wins: Netherlands 5 (Romania 0)
Bookies Favourite: Netherlands 80/1 (Romania 300/1)

S10 is the professional name of Stien den Hollander, who was internally selected to represent the Netherlands. wrs is the professional name of  singer and dancer Andrei-Ionuț Ursu who came second to Dora Gaitanovici in a close televote in the Romanian national final, but wrs earned his way to Eurovision with the jury vote. it is fair as it was the more complete performance having dance.

S10's song is a story about her life and her battle with bi-polar disorder. It is also about this pressure and need to be someone that young people appear to put on themselves. Conversely wrs gives us a upbeat latino inspired pop song with a 90s beat that is easy to dance to if he nails it then 300/1 seems cruel

In the end everything is about how it goes on the night. S10 has a big stage to fill with her small presence whereas wrs can fill it with dance. though wrs could end up being as messy as Montenegro in 2017, it will be entertaining

This round goes to Romania

2020: Jeangu Macrooy – Grow
2021: Jeangu Macrooy – The Birth of a New Age

Current Bookmakers: 30th

Jeangu Macrooy is a Surinamese singer who moved to the Netherlands about 7 years ago to pursue musical success. It was a good move for his career because it has got him to Eurovision, but he has not had a hugely charting single or album. He goes on TV a bit though and that makes him famous.

The song selected for 2020 was a song that hits everyone. It would have been amazing to see Grow on the Eurovision stage. My only criticism of that song is that it just ends, I want more of it. Grow is different to Birth of a New Age which is a song ruined by the existence of The Lion King. Comparing them is chalk and cheese, but Grow deserved Eurovision and would probably have done better.

The Netherlands were very successful in the early days of Eurovision with 4 wins in the first 20 years, but when they won in 2019 that was the first win for the Eurovision in over 40 years. Though they didn’t win in 1961, it was a good song and it shows the beauty of the Dutch language.

Netherlands - 4 wins (including 1969)
Duncan Laurence - "Arcade"

Verses

Switzerland - 2 wins
Luca Hänni - "She Got Me"

Two internal selections, neither of which are original, but originality is not a requirement of Eurovision. The last winning song for the Netherlands was in 1975 and that sounded like a TV show theme song (though it did have the classic line "and you walk along with your Ding dang dong"). This song is at least better than previous Dutch winners like "De troubadour", "Een Beetje" and "Net als toen"

Duncan Laurence is currently favourite with the bookmakers, but then so was Italy in 2017 and they finished 6th (the year Portugal came in from 5th 6 weeks out to win) so anything in the top 5 could still win and Switzerland are third with the bookmakers, though the song sounds like it wants to be be "Despacito". Why not sounds like "Ne partez pas sans moi" or "Refrain" or a winner like that... well... ok I understand.

Both of these will come down to performance, but right now I am going The Netherlands
