This year I was very disappointed in my football team, the Fremantle Dockers. It wasn't how they performed on the field, they were glorious to watch, it wasn't what their players did off the field, they managed to stay largely out of the news, it wasn't to do with the coaches or the sponsors of anything to do with the football at all, it was that the management have entertained the idea of relocating the club from Fremantle. That is against everything that makes the club Freo.

The only remote positive of the relocation is that it would be closer to me and to many other fans in a more populated area south of Fremantle. The problem is, it is out of Fremantle, the town that not only gave the team its name, but its history, not just the football history) though it is a great part, it is not the most important part of Fremantle (the clubs) history). The most important part was when it was announced that a second AFL team would be based in Western Australia.

Fremantle was announced as the obvious choice of the location for the second AFL team in WA, however some in the know thought it would be better to base the team in the growing northern suburbs or Perth. This made the people who would become the Freo faithful angry a. In 1997 we almost lost our team again, but protests and a Mayor on a mission saved the day.

I understand that driving into Fremantle is difficult at the best of times, but Fremantle oval has an east gate near Fremantle prison. How hard is it to make that into a traffic assess to the oval for staff and players.

The issue if not that they are moving from Fremantle oval though. If they moved to East Fremantle oval that would be completely acceptable. It is that they are moving to a lake.

One of the things about Fremantle (the town) is that it has a high density of hippies and other people who are very politically left. Fremantle (the club) was built to embody everything Freo. It was a little left of centre to start with with its unique logo and colours. Now they want to relocate to a purpose built facility on the water catchment of a small lake in a municipality that that completely disregards the environment. That's progress though isn't it. It is about selling out on all your values and being bastards like the other WA team. Well the Freo faithful don't like those bastards and if you become one of them, you will lose us too.

We are the Purple Passion. We have been passionate to stick with this club through the bad times, and we are passionate enough to turn our back when we, as supporters, are wronged. Personally, my second team has always been Sydney, and I am not afraid to get some red and white.

Think about it Freo. Put fans first.
