There has been five deaths deemed to be caused by sharks in the last 12 months in Western Australia and the jump to save lives has lead the state government to one resolution: kill them all . Proactive culling is the current promise to protect our precious human lives. However as any West Aussie will tell you, if you don’t want to be taken by a shark, stay out of the water.

Polls in WA show between one third and three quarters of the West Australian public are against culling, it is a very 1960’s mentality that we are the owners of the land and sea. We are more enlightened in this day and age and we know we are the protectors more than owners. We have confirmed the Great whites need protection from everyone except the Department of Fisheries.

Some sharks are the top of the ocean food chain. Sharks help control not only other populations in the ocean, but assist in removing the bulk waste like the odd whale carcass floating in the sea. We have all seen the mess created when a whale carcass washes up on a beach and we try to remove the carcass with explosives . If a shark spots a whales remains floating in the ocean, the shark thinks ‘you beauty! I wont need to eat for a week!’, and the feeding frenzy begins.

There are few things a great white likes less than a human though. We are a tease to most sharks in our wetsuits that make us looks like seals. They expect to chomp on a nice fatty Pinniped and instead find themselves munching on bones. We are too crunchy for the average shark and to devour us is not energy efficient for the shark. Whereas a seal will keep a shark happy for a number of days, a great white may regurgitate a large amount of the average person as it is inedible to them. Great whites want fat. Sure throwing Clive Palmer or Gina Rinehart to the sharks may initially give them a good feed (and be a positive for society) but even they would give a great white a some indigestion.

Netting off beaches wont work because of the collateral damage, and other species shouldn’t suffer for our fear. Culling wont work because great whites are already a threatened species and we don’t want them all gone. Tagging and studying sharks is the only good thing the WA state government has put forward. Maybe one day we can find a way to live with sharks, but until they grow legs, most of us are fairly safe.

Maybe that’s the fear though, maybe the government things evolution will be haste and we will be soon fighting off sharks in our own front yards. It is not the sharks coming from the ocean that we should worry about though, it is those that already have legs that plan on culling a beautiful animal.

Save the sharks, cull the politicians.

It's really disgusting. I don't understand what the hell is going through their heads. I'd kind of like to see Greenpeace or the Seashepard head over there and cause trouble. Australia thinks it's so enlightened and then we do this crap?

channel 9 had a news poll last night and only 25% (exactly 1 1/4) supported shark culling. 3/4 said no to it. 75%!

You have to bare in mind that we are approaching an election probably early next year and this is the kind of policy that appeals to backwards liberal voters in our backward liberal (just) state.

the greens currently hold one seat in the lower house here (fremantle, which they took from labor, but the greens may lose it due to who they have as their representative in freo... long story, much of it is here http://www.watoday.com.au/wa-news/buswell-resigns-over-secret-sex-sessions-on-taxpayers-tab-20100425-tksk.html)

we have a minority government, the libs are only in power thanks to the nats. i think this whole shebang will get more people voting greens and the ineffectual nats (they have done nothing with their power to stop the stupidity, they have gone quiet since the election actually), they will likely be reduced.

People like that always amaze me. I don't understand all the work it takes to get into power, and then to turn around and do that sort of crap.

The nats have really become nothing anywhere anymore. The greens are definitely gaining a foothold. I find it a real shame that the Sex Party went with a name for the shock value. They've got some great policies, but people won't vote for "The Sex Party"

I love the ASP, i love the ad they did for the victorian state election. it was stupid facebook banned their ads because it said 'sex party' I can see them using ASP more in the future though

The nats and the greens in wa are separate from the natonal nats and greens, completely different organisations. the nats still have alot of sway in the country

family fist, sorry first, also have some good policies (particularly around custody of children), pity they are a bunch of religious nut jobs.

anyway it is 5.5 months until our state election. I am hoping sense will prevail, it didn't last time, but I am hoping anyways

That's right, I knew that they were completely separate over there, but I forgot.

That's the problem with family first. It's hard to see the good policies over the crazy.

I think pushing the "ASP" name is a fantastic idea for the sex party.

Good luck on not getting crazies at the election!

Yeah, I think so. I just hope that Abbott doesn't end up as PM. Even if the Libs do get in, as long as it's not him in charge

I hope so. For one thing, I can see him giving the libs a conscience vote on gay marriage, which is a good start.

people have been arguing for gay marriage the wrong way. if they pointed out how much money would be spent on gay marriages, how much money that would put into small businesses and how much tax the government would get, people would start to change their mind. make it all about job creation and even family fist will have a hard time arguing against it.

You know what pissed me off? People getting huffy that people in Tasmania might vote for it because of the economy. It will be a huge boon to businesses, and tourism. It would've helped Tassie so much to have all of that coming into the state. And it would be great for Australia to have it as well. People will pick a random country that will let them marry, and travel there.

It would be fantastic if it happened just for altruistic reasons, but if it is allowed just because of how it will affect the economy, who cares? It still means that it's then legal! And I do think that it would help change peoples opinions in general if it was just legal at that point.

thats it, change has to be made in bite sized pieces, people have to digest it before they can be fed the next morsel. I don't care what bit people find more digestible, as long as we eventually accept that bestiality and pedophilia will always be illegal and mutual love is love.

I get annoyed that there are men out there that can get sacked for coming out because they work with children and people automatically assume if you are gay and work with children, you are a pedophile. women can be pedophiles and men also abuse young girls.

if you don't wanna know what they do in the bedroom, don't ask. just don't judge when they are sleeping with someone o the same gender. I know heaps of straight people who do shit in the bedroom that I don't wanna know about... don't get me started on 50 shades

gah, 50 shades. Best way to encourage abusive relationships, since there's none of the safeguards of S&M.

I was reading something about how homosexuality was illegal, and so people have a criminal record *just* for that, and so if they ever want to apply for jobs with children or anything that needs a criminal check, then it's possible that those convictions will come up. In most states, it's up to the police's discretion if they disclose that certain ... levels? of conviction exist, but that's a horrible position to be in.

I saw a great cartoon the other day, that described how straight and gay marriage should be fine, because BOTH parties are consenting people. But in the case of bestiality, and paedophilia, the other party can NOT give informed consent, either because it's an animal or because children are not capable of that. So why not just accept that CONSENTING people can love who they want.

Alan Turing... nuff said.

I know people who really loved the book, I haven't read it after being informed that it was poorly written. I have heard from some people who had read them and didn't like the later books that is was an emotionally and physically abusive relationship. meanwhile I have a friend at work who is being manipulated by her husband and can't see it. just on the topic of abusive relationships.

but consent, that is the main point
