2021: Jeangu Macrooy – The Birth of a New Age

Current Bookmakers: 30th

Jeangu Macrooy is a Surinamese singer who moved to the Netherlands about 7 years ago to pursue musical success. It was a good move for his career because it has got him to Eurovision, but he has not had a hugely charting single or album. He goes on TV a bit though and that makes him famous.

The song selected for 2020 was a song that hits everyone. It would have been amazing to see Grow on the Eurovision stage. My only criticism of that song is that it just ends, I want more of it. Grow is different to Birth of a New Age which is a song ruined by the existence of The Lion King. Comparing them is chalk and cheese, but Grow deserved Eurovision and would probably have done better.

The Netherlands were very successful in the early days of Eurovision with 4 wins in the first 20 years, but when they won in 2019 that was the first win for the Eurovision in over 40 years. Though they didn’t win in 1961, it was a good song and it shows the beauty of the Dutch language.
