Winner: Cláudia Pascoal
Song: O Jardim

Portugal had a tie in their national selection this year with “O Jardim” getting 10 points from the jury and 12 from the public and “Para sorrir eu não preciso de nada" getting 12 from the jury and 10 from the public. In Portugal what they people want they get, so Cláudia is going to Eurovision over the possibly marginally better Catarina Miranda, though in reality, neither are great.

Festival da Canção was first career win, and considering her career in music has been competing in Ídolos (2010 and 2015), X Factor (2013), The Voice Of Portugal (2017). This is already the “I am desperate to be famous” holy trinity, but on top of this she has also competed in CC Casting to win hosting duties of Curto Circuito. This girl needs to write a resume and get a real job like everyone else does.

“O Jardim” sounds a little like “When Love takes Over” without all the good bits. It may be presented well on the night, it should be seeing Portugal is hosting the event, but it may put a few people to sleep.

Sometimes only silence enables one to establish what they want to say. That was the theme of the 1984 entry from Portugal. There is something in that for all of us.
