Apr. 29th, 2018 06:14 pmAppearances: 57
Wins: 2
Selection method: National public selections, Operación Triunfo 2017
Vote: Gala 11 Jury with public ‘save’, Gala Eurovisión public televote
Winner: Amaia & Alfred
Song: Tu Canción
It is bad enough have reality show contestants as Eurovision participants, but Spain took it one step further. Spain had a reality show, Operación Triunfo (Star Academy clone, similar to Idol), to decide who could represent them. The twist is that the winner of Operación Triunfo may not be the representative for Spain. As it turned out she was, but the top 6 could perform songs for the Eurovision selection which was held 1 week prior to the winners show. It is not a surprise though that Spain doesn’t understand to concept of ‘winning’ considering how they treated the referendum vote in Catalonia.
Spain’s representatives finished 1st and 4th respectively in the final of Operación Triunfo, and neither are strangers to ‘talent’ shows. Amaia was on the child talent show Cántame una canción in 2010 and then on El Número Uno in 2012 when she exited in the 6th week. Alfred was on La Voz (The voice) in 2016 but none of the judges turned their chair for him and he was rejected, and the only place to send rejects from The Voice is to Eurovision.
This song is an innocuous little ballad. Performed right it will not be hard on the ear at all and it deserves to fair better than last year’s entry. It is not terrible anyways.
Spain likes singing about your song. This visual feast is from 1979. Su Canción is more a visual feast than aural…
