It is all over. I am gutted with the result and I am already suffering withdrawal, but there is something more important now, the wash-up.
The full results for both Semis are already out and they draw a clearer picture of the mess that resulted in a win for Denmark in this years Eurovision
I will go back to Semi two later, but I would just like to mention that Latvia came last, 17th. I am devastated by this. I loved latvia... they had a Keytar! they had glittery suits! They were the only country out of all the former Russian, Baltic and Scandinavian countries to have not qualified and they were the most fun! as for the rest... Here we go.
Semi final one
The bulk of the former Yugoslav countries featured in this final and not one qualified. They did occupy 11th (Serbia), 12th (Montenegro) and 13th (Croatia), meaning they just missed out. 2013 will be the year that there was a bloc out of Yugoslavia.
looking at the votes from the former Yugoslav countries, three of them gave 3 of their top 4 votes (12, 10, 8 and 7) to non Yugoslav countries, namely Denmark, Russia and the Ukraine. the exception, Serbia, still gave decent points to those countries. The lesson here is VOTE FOR YOUR NEIGHBOURS and hope they vote for you back. thats the only way you can qualify
That being said, there was a quite clear line of 6 points between tenth and 11th and a large portion of the votes were distributed between three countries with Denmark getting 167 points in the semi
Semi Final Two
Again there was a clear line between those who qualified and those that didn't. 16 points between 10th and 11th, Between Georgia and San Marino.
Azerbaijan won this semi with 139 points which is less than third place got in the first semi. this didn't stop Azerbaijan finishing second over-all in the final. There were 4 clear favourites in the second Semi with Azerbaijan being joined by Greece (121), Norway (120) and Malta (118)
whats more interesting is the spread of votes. Azerbaijan got points from every other country in the semi except Germany and Armenia. similarly Norway missed the Albania and France. other two from the top 4 got votes from all but one country in the semi. Malta got no points from Bulgaria and Greece were denied points from France.
this did not translate to success in the final with Azerbaijan not getting any votes from 9 countries, Greece was not validated by 12 of its peers, Malta 16 and Norway missed out on votes from 4 countries. Norway were awesome though.
realistically though, if you are not in the top 4 in the semi, you wont do well in the final. it is rare to win when you did not finish first in your final. it can be done, 'Wild Dancers' and 'Running Scared' finished second in their respective semis and won. 'Believe' won from third in the semi in 2008. generally you need to win your semi.
I would really like to see the jury v televote results. but at the moment. there has been the question of if the first semi had the right amount of neighbour countries. some think neighbour voting it ruining Eurovision. the truth is though that if you dont qualify now, you wont win in the final if the semis are stacked better anyways. is it better to allow neighbours to stack themselves in the final so they have to spread their votes amongst more neighbours. this means that the non-aligned countries that do qualify for the final have a better chance to win.
there were heaps of countries I wanted to see qualify, namely Croatia (13th) and Latvia (17th) but if they couldn't get the votes to get out of the semi, they would not have got enough votes to win and what is the use of going into the final if you don't win? if you are not competing in the final, you can get drunk all night so win-win.
not like much of Eurovision is a win, but anyways
