today, I went to vote, and at jandakot Primary (which is in the seat of Cockburn and not jandakot as the name would suggest) there was a sign on a wall about the rules of the school. these included that if you got to the school before 8.30, you were to sit in the courtyard outside the library. at 8.30 you are allowed to proceed to your class, however if there is no teacher, you are to go back to the courtyard and wait. it also said that 'before school time is not playtime'. If i spit out kids, they are not going to school there. I mean I would expect that from a catholic school, but not a government school.
I mean when I was a kid of 6,7,8,9,10... there was no way on gods green earth I would sit in a courtyard before school and do nothing. They are kids ffs!

Date: 2008-09-06 03:23 pm (UTC)Assuming school starts at 9:00, that's only kids who for some reason or other have to be dropped off really early. If the school doesn't have staff around that early, there is a bunch of leagal stuff they need to worry about (with kids wondering off and playing). That's probably the work of some leagal eagle worrying about insurance or liability (or there is when the teachers weren't around and because they couldn't or wouldn't stop the parents from dropping their kids off so early they had to find annother solution).

Date: 2008-09-07 12:28 am (UTC)we also had a few old school teachers, who were there to teach and not baby sit.
as long as we were inside when the first siren went (with the exclusion of Jason Cooling who rang the siren), generally the teachers didnt care what we did, and we had a full sized footy oval to run around on and we generally did

Date: 2008-09-06 03:33 pm (UTC)All schools are either likerhis or will be like this soon. It is not worth the risk andrhe teachers unions won't let teachers have any more duty.so every school will do this kind of thing.
But yeah. It does kind of suck. Our kids get told off for getting to school before 8.30 or after 8.45. It's quite funny really. They have a 15 minute window. And we have 250 kids.

Date: 2008-09-07 12:18 am (UTC)with catholic schools though, it would be easy for parents to have to sign a disclaimer that any death or injury outside of school hours is not the responsibility of the school
