Eurovision 2018: San Marino
Apr. 24th, 2018 08:35 pmAppearances: 8
Wins: 0
Selection method: National Final
Vote: Jury and Crowdfunding vote
Winner: Jessika featuring Jenifer Brening
Song: Who We Are
This song is desperate to not appear to be plagiarising the 2015 Eurovision winner “Heroes” in the chorus. That is not the saddest thing about this song. The saddest thing that despite an international call out and an online ‘crowdfunding’ vote, this was the best song San Marino could get.
Jessika Muscat has tried to represent her native Malta for most of the last decade, and considering some of the trash she has lost to, it is not a surprise that she tried to enter for another country. As for Jenifer Brening, she was a ‘talent’ show contestant who had two songs to perform in the Sammarinese final. The other one was debatably better.
The Austrian entrant for Eurovision in 2016, Zoë, co-wrote a number of the songs in the Sammarinese final including this song and the other song Jenifer Bening sung. This highlights a flaw in the Sammarinese selection process. The Online votes had to be purchased by the voter for each of the songs and during the voting process the method and pricing changed. So San Marino did not necessarily get the best songs in their national selection, they got the songs submitted by the richest contenders, with the general public’s opinion being purchased out.
San Marino never do well in Eurovision, but then they are just there to give votes to Italy and so they can go on not qualifying for the final like in 2011.
