Australia - 0 wins
Kate Miller-Heidke - "Zero Gravity"
Verses
Ukraine - 2 wins
MARUV – "Siren Song (Bang!)"
The indi-popratic queen verses... well nothing. Ukraine unfortunately withdrew from this years Eurovision song contest after national final winner MARUV refused to sign the contract to represent Ukraine. If what came out about the contract is true, MARUV would have had to pay her own way to Eurovision and also would have had to cancel her Russian tour, because Ukrainians cannot be friends with Russia. Apparently second place refused to sign as well as all the other competitors so Ukraine is not going to Eurovision this year. Shame because it is not a bad song.
Australia's national selection was no where near as controversial. Yes the commentary was shit and there were no wild dancers but the result was the one Eurovision fans in Australia had demanded for about 2 years. Kate Miller-Heidke may not be everyone's cup of tea, but she was always going to do something interesting which is what Australian fans wanted. Maybe next year we will send Katie Noonan, Birds of Tokyo or someone else who will do something interesting and Australian to challenge the Kylie Minogueness that Australian music is often accused of.
If Australian lost to Maruv instead of Jamala in 2016, I would have been ok with that. This year with no competition I am going Australia
