sport for women too
Mar. 2nd, 2013 08:51 amSo,
one of my friends pointed me to a petition on Change.org and from there I started looking at a couple of the other petitions and there was one about the ANZ netball championships the the desire to get them broadcast on FTATV
the amount of people who play netball is roughly equivalent to the total population of Adelaide, our 5th biggest city... but no one cares about Adelaide and no one cares about women's sport (unless they are in bikinis or are bending over in a short skirt)
OK, we have more than tennis and beach volleyball on TV. there is Women's soccer and we got the women's world cup cricket final... and then there is.... not really much else.
the time dedicated to women's sport in total on TV is still less than AFL in AFL states alone... even in an Olympic year.
there is an easy way to solve the problem though: first change sport funding. reduce funding to the major sports like NRL, AFL, Men's Cricket, Swimming (lets face it, they just spend the money on Stilnox anyways) . reduce funding to these by at least 30%... actually AFL and NRL don't need any funding, they should have enough money from broadcast rights so fvck em.
once that's done use the money to fully fund a new channel on ABC or SBS dedicated to women in sport. not just women's sport, but have features on chicks who play against the boys.
the whole point of funding anything it to help who you are funding to help themselves and this would successfully do that for women's sport by giving them a platform.
and women's sport would stop being judged just by tits and arses.
