Eurovision 2018: Finland
Apr. 18th, 2018 08:16 pmAppearances: 51
Wins: 1
Selection method: Singer: Internally selected. Song: National final Uuden Musiikin Kilpailu 2018
Vote: Jury and public vote combined
Winner: Saara Aalto
Song: Monsters
Saara co-wrote this song with the writers of the 2015 winning song Heroes, which wold indicate this could be a winner if Heroes won for being a great song rather than being a great performance. If she nails the performance this will be top 10, but it will need a blinding performance to get top 5.
Saara was installed as the singer to represent Finland by Broadcaster Yle. The public and jury were then left to choose between three songs for her to sing. The installation of Saara as the countries representative was done after she tried to get to Eurovision in 2011 and 2016 finishing second both times. In 2016 she was the most popular with the public but was skunted by the jury. Still it is unusual that Finland did not allow a vote of both the artist and the song like they usually do.
This song consists of 2 and a half 4 line stanzas of lyrics, which is not an impediment to winning, it is just a bit lazy. Finland’s only win in 2006 required a lot more words than that, but then Norway won with 5 lines in 1995 and one of those lines was just one word: Nocturne.
Monsters is expected to finish somewhere in the middle of the field, a bit like Finland did in 1966 wit Playboy.
