teachers get paid 67kpa

really?

ok, this figure was giving in the context of the teacher pay demands. apparently teachers want 75kpa

yes, this was on 7 news...

LOL, since when?

And honestly, 75kpa to teach doesn't seem excessive to me, anyway

*dies laughing*

Yeah. I get 48, actually (well, I get about 35, because I'm only 0.8). You don't get that much until you have been doing it for 7 years, and with conditions the way they are, many don't get that far.

a summary of pay rates, if you're interested. ;)

The big thing I hope we get is class sizes. Currently, I can be asked to teach a class as big as 32. My biggest atm is 26, and that's difficult enough for me, thanks!

if you are safety bay or girrawheen you deserve 75k+ safety allowance

yeah see I thought it was the most amusing thing 7 every had on, thats why I noted the context. they are trying to make teachers look evil for wanting a pay rise.

hey, i am fully in support of a teachers stike

From: [identity profile] bekscilla.livejournal.com
exactly! Gah, teachers are so undervalued. They should pay em well, then weed out the shit ones!

girrawheen = broadmeadows

yeah and they wonder why teachers are leaving teaching. we had an ex-teacher in our call centre for a while. she loved call centre work because it was less stressful and there was less politics (she was a private school teacher)

yep. 7 were going at the max level of pay for teachers and not the average level of pay for teachers just as i thought

good old sensationalist journalism, eh?

I'm currently annoyed at the union too, though. We have a stop work meeting on Thursday morning... Thursday is my morning off! Why couldn't it be Thursday arvo when I have icky Dance that I am no damn good at teaching?? Oh well, at least it should keep attendance down a bit and I have an excuse to do something a bit pointless.

It's only average if you factor in level 3s... who have comparable responsibilities to a HOLA (Head of Learning Area). Heck, why not put in Principals too, then they can claim we all earn an average of 75-80K?

this link is actually better cos you can see all the increments. You start on level 1.6 as a graduate, then each year you go up one until you hit 2.4. Then you have to apply for Senior Teacher and do a bunch of PDs to go further--and they're not taking apps atm cos they're swamped, apparently.

I should shut up now, I'm not meaning to preach the cause so much!

my dad always said that there are two careers that you shouldnt go into because they are over worked and undervalued:
teaching and nursing

LOL, yeah I alays said the same. Then I forgot to take my on advice--whoops!

I am loving it this year, though. Teaching Drama rocks--I get to play all day! If I can just offload the Dance I will be in total bliss, I think. I'd almost do it for free...

yeah, when i read the entry i thought, depends very much on the experience, and where you are at, and what position. the top paid teachers are probably on that, and wanting the $75k, while the public are made to think that all teachers get at least that much, which would be a good start

yeah, dad was doing 80 hour weeks as a principal (that had to take a class a week also) and still only getting $65-70k

There is NO WAY that I'd be doing that much work for that little pay without some ability for increases because of the work. Dad 'could' have done less, but needed at least 60 most weeks, and 80 was pretty much him doing a good job so he could keep that position at the next round of interviews.

Is being a principal the only job where you have to interview for your own job every 5 (or 6) years?

please ... don't get me started on pay rates ... nurses get worse pay (despite recent pay increases thanks to the union) and have to deal with similar or worse crap.

I knew the teacher who was in the next classroom over. He had to take the knive out of the guy's hands. He was never quite the same again.

No, he was an english teacher who lived nearby. His son was one of my little brother's best friends.

And actually my (half-)sister's cousin was one of the stabby guy's best friends. They sat next to each other in the school band.

Fucking Perth...
